Chocolate Toxicity in Dogs: How Much Is an Emergency

The dose makes the emergency

Chocolate toxicity is pure math: your dog's weight, the type of chocolate, and how much went down. The toxic compound is theobromine — dogs metabolize it roughly six times slower than humans, which is why your candy bar is their poison. Milk chocolate carries about 44 mg of theobromine per ounce; semisweet around 150 mg; baker's chocolate and unsweetened cocoa powder can exceed 400 mg per ounce. A 50-pound dog eating a milk chocolate bar is a watch-and-wait; the same dog eating two squares of baker's chocolate is a phone call right now.

As a rough floor: mild symptoms begin around 20 mg of theobromine per kilogram of dog, and severe effects around 40–50 mg/kg. If the wrapper is still around, the vet math takes seconds — that's why hotlines ask for it first.

Symptoms, in the order they usually arrive

Chocolate acts like a stimulant that the body can't clear quickly. Expect a staircase, not a switch:

  • First 2–6 hours: vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, excessive thirst and urination
  • Next: racing heart, pacing, panting, muscle twitching
  • Severe cases: tremors, seizures, heart arrhythmias — these are ER-now signs at any dose level

What to do, in order

Call first, drive second: ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline (855) 764-7661, both 24/7, or your vet/emergency clinic. Have the wrapper, your dog's weight, and a time estimate ready. If the call happens within the first hour or two, vets can often induce vomiting safely — which is why the timing of your call matters more than anything else you might do. Do NOT induce vomiting yourself with home methods; hydrogen peroxide dosing is a vet-guided decision, and doing it wrong causes lung damage.

The sneaky sources

Brownies add chocolate plus sometimes xylitol in sugar-free versions. Cocoa powder dusting a countertop is the most concentrated exposure in most kitchens. Chocolate-covered raisins stack two toxins at once. And garden mulch made from cocoa shells is a real outdoor hazard for dogs who chew mulch. Check our full chocolate entry for the verdict card, and keep holiday baking supplies in closed cabinets — December is poison control's busy season for a reason.

Common questions

How much chocolate kills a dog?

It's weight-and-type math, not a single number: dangerous symptoms start around 40–50 mg of theobromine per kg of dog. For a 20 lb dog, that's roughly one ounce of baker's chocolate but eleven ounces of milk chocolate. When in doubt, call a hotline with the wrapper — the math takes them seconds.

My dog ate chocolate but seems fine — can I wait?

Call anyway. Theobromine is slowly absorbed, and symptoms commonly start 2–6 hours later. 'Seems fine' right now is exactly what the first hour of chocolate poisoning looks like.

What about white chocolate?

White chocolate has negligible theobromine — it's mostly fat and sugar, so the realistic risk is pancreatitis from a big amount, not classic chocolate toxicity. Still worth a call if a large quantity went down.
